Inspiration from a Lifelong Vegetarian
– Writing and Photos

A bit of news in the words of Teagen McClain, activist extraordinaire:

Today there is an exploding interest in eating organic, locally sourced, plant- based foods. People all over are demanding more vegetarian and vegan choices. More than ever we all want fresh, nourishing, delicious food! You don’t have to be a vegetarian or long-time health foodie to enjoy what the co-op has to offer. Every one is welcome to explore and learn!
A co-operative store is owned by its members who pay a small yearly fee to receive discounted prices when they shop. Any profits go back into programs that benefit the local community.

We want to transform this 8,000 square foot empty building into a spacious store featuring grocery, fresh organic local produce, specialty products and a cafe/bakery/deli/juice bar featuring innovative soups, salads, entrees and desserts! We will also have a vitamin department with a homeopathic/herbal pharmacy, natural personal and home care products, and cookbooks. We even have plans for a rooftop garden. It doesn’t get more local than that! This location is easily accessed from the main freeway, has a huge underground parking garage and is adjacent to an alternative fueling station!
You can look forward to free cooking demonstrations, lectures, workshops, movie nights and other special events in our theater community room! You can enjoy lunch among neighbors on our covered outdoor patio!

Is something this fantastic possible? Yes! Here’s where you come in. We need your help to fund contractors, sign fabricators, equipment purchases and planning department fees to keep the project moving and let the co-op open in the Spring. If you’re unfamiliar with Kickstarter, we don’t get a cent of what’s pledged unless we reach or exceed our goal. So in addition to donating, join us in spreading the word on Facebook, Twitter, your blog or newsletter and by emailing your closest friends and co-workers. Tell everyone you know to pledge! The clock is ticking; together we can make it happen! In return for your support, we’re offering great rewards like t-shirts, vegan fudge brownies, personalized plaques and memberships. You’ll have the pride of knowing that you helped create the first of its kind, the San Diego Vegan Co-op!

We have until October 13th to reach our goal and receive the funds to get started!

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Since their launch in 2009 there have been more than 29,000 successful campaigns.
