Inspiration from a Lifelong Vegetarian
– Writing and Photos

kauai2011 081Kauai, Hawaii is a seriously gorgeous island offering relaxation and healthy fare for travelers and locals. Rainbow Living Foods is the first all raw gluten-free restaurant on Kauai. Small, bright and located behind Java Kai in Kapaa off the main highway, the place has been open less than a year. They use 100 % compostable dishware and besides dining in, offer catering too. The Rainbow Burger was a hearty choice  – a walnut/sunflower patty on flax bread with pesto, cashew cheese, avocado, arugula and more. Something of interest on the menu was Russian Caviar (made of chia and nori with macadamia cheese).
The Chocolate Irish Moss smoothie was delicious, blended with banana, nut milk and agave.  Between that and the raw cacao fudge, my friend and I got a serious chocolate high, and I had quite a sugar crash afterwards, but it was worth it. Also check out Hoku Foods Natural Market, Papaya’s, and Mermaids in Kapaa.

kauai2011 014A Kauai favorite will always be Postcards Cafe, owned and lovingly run for 15 years by my parents, where veggies find great things like organic green salads, an Indian style tofu and veggies dish, and a rockin’ chocolate pie.

Common Ground in Kilauea is a sustainable community with a restaurant called The Garden – I hear their fresh-picked veggies and salads are good. Don’t forget to check out the Harvest Market and farmer’s markets in Hanalei (and other towns) for fresh produce – papayas, bananas, coconuts and such, plus other treats.
